REVIEWED By Joshua A. TRILIEGI

A dangerously loyal adaption of a highly influential and often misunderstood novel
by an author who dearly loved his friends, jazz, people and places that were inspiring.
" The only ones for me are the mad ones... " is a quote from Jack Kerouac's novel
which was reviewed by a stand - in literature critic for The New York Times, who
lauded the work as a breakthrough moment in American Literature and a star was
born. This is the novel that inspired an entire generation to break free of the social
norms and simply be yourself, travel, make love, make music, love the common man,
write about your hearts desires and most of all, love your life for all it has to offer.

First of all, I am a biased reviewer in that I love Jack Kerouac, The Beats, Jazz,
the common man, people and places that are inspiring. I have read most of the
novels and published letters by the characters personified within this film: Jack
Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg & William Burroughs and have produced minor films that
were inspired by these American authors. That said, this is the greatest film adaption
of any Beat Film ever. One only hopes that the film makers will be able to put on the
screen a classic novel that so many of us have loved, honored and cherished our whole
lives. The film is nothing less than the most perfect adaption ever produced on Beats.
From the opening shot above a parking lot to the final scene on the streets of New York,
the film breaths life into an impossible novel that took decades to bring to the big screen.
Francis Ford Coppola executive produces [ that means he put up the dough ] so that the
director Walter Salles could bring this gem into existence and put himself into the major
arena of outstanding film adaption by directors who shall be honored for years to come.

The performances as far as I am concerned, are pitch perfect. Accents, performances,
style and character development as well as a commitment to realistic personifications
are entirely delivered with a loyalty to truth, legend and entertainment. This is dangerous.
This is exciting. This is Inspiring. This is On The Road and life after Neil Cassady will
never be the same again. For those not ' In The Know ' heres a primer. Have you ever
had a best friend ? Attractive, exciting, dangerous, from the wrong side of the tracks ?
Someone who showed you a side of life never seen within your own house, neighborhood,
city, state, country ? Well, Jack Kerouac did, he had several, but his old pal Neil took the
cake. Sure, he also had Allen Ginsberg, who would go onto write the famous poem that
was banned for indecency entitled, " HOWL ". These days it is taught as a major work of
art at places like West Point Academy. He also had William Burroughs famous for his
dangerously subversive novel entitled, " Naked Lunch " another Beat film which was also
brought to the big screen by Canadian director, David Cronenberg. Another dangerously
loyal film adaption that went way beyond the book into the realm of Burroughsian-Land.

Jack was probably the least eccentric of all the Beats, A French Catholic boy who loved
America dearly, hated suppressive government and wanted to express that in his work.
On The Road was his opus which sat around for years, influencing his friends as well as
informing his detractors and pissing off the squares who had no idea what he was talking
about most of the time. The film offers a straight ahead, lush and lovely offering - like
version of the written word that is bound to ruffle a few feathers, scare a few squares,
rattle a few cages and inspire more than a few too read the novels and break free once
again. Its a beautiful look at an oppressive time in America. These are the Mc Carthy
Years. the time of the black lists in Hollywood and New York. Eisenhower, Truman, etc...

The story and film itself is insulated by its own parameters of friendship, loyalty, love,
sex, drugs and endless searchings for kicks, kicks, kicks. Do you know the song lyric,
" Get your kicks on Route 66 ... " ? The popularity of goatee beards, black sunglasses,
black clothes, jazz music for white folks, coffeehouses, Bob Dylan, poetry, classic cars,
the popularity of Marijuana, traveling by bus, car and railway, heading West, the entire
hippy movement, rock and roll, tune in , turn on and drop out, as well as the writings of
folks who brought us : One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, Easy Rider and This film here,
all of it stems from the pen, the mind, the man, the myth, the legend that is Jack Kerouac.

The canon of influence that ON THE ROAD and HOWL and NAKED LUNCH had is quite
immense. These folks were dealing with themes and taboos that have been broken wide
open : Mixed Race Couples, Gay Sex, Marijuana. In the nineteen fifties, you went to jail,
were beaten down or in some case were actually killed for being outside the system. Some
would argue that some of these restrictions have creeped up on us again. In any event,
this a an outstanding rendition of a classic American Novel that to be sure, Jack Kerouac
and his pals, gals and fans would be very proud of. Its the real thing. A word about the
production design. Flawless costumes, atmosphere, hand held camera work that captures
the mystery, mastery and misanthropy as well as the come downs from the heavy high of
being On The Road and having to come home, back down to Earth, back to the real world.

I am unsure what the average American viewer will think of all the sex, drugs and rock
& roll. There are plenty of inside jokes for beat fans, beat readers and those who actually
lived through this period of time. I will say that the performances are explicit, expressive
and exciting as well as entertaining. There is just the right amount of travel across America
and into Mexico as well as a balanced display of the price this type of life costed the
participants as well as the friends and relatives of those nearby. For Jack, it gave him
life lessons, broke his heart, gave him a novel and taught him a thing or two about
loyalty, friendship, love, freedom and the boundaries thereof. For beat fans this is
a fabulous film, for the actors, maybe a nomination, for the producer and director,
one can only hope for a few awards by early next year. Ya got my vote. Because the
only ones for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to be saved,
desirous of everything...

Film Review by Joshua A. TRILIEGI

A boy. A tiger. A Boat. Memory, perception, loss and survival swirl
into a story retold through the eyes of time. Looking back on events
that have transformed our experience and shaped our world view is
always a perception game. In " The Life of PI " a new major motion
picture by Ang Lee, we get a primer on a young boys search for the
meaning of god and the symbols that represent it from many sources.
Before being catapulted into the survival story which is a psyche out.

Isolation, starvation, survival and retaining ones sanity under arduous
conditions as a young person does some pretty funny tricks on the mind.
Throughout history, film history that is, we have had quite a few films
which have taken place on the water. The Titanic films of the 1940's,
1950's, as well as 1970's " Posseiden Adventure " and the latest
version.
There was " Lifeboat " , which at the core has much in common with,
" Life of PI " , ethics of the survivalist, cannibalism : who should
live
and die ?, etc ... " The Old Man and The Sea " is another that comes to
mind, it's almost a genre. " The Deep " and " Big Blue ". " Jaws " .
These are films where the ocean itself is a character or an animal plays
a key role in the relationship with our characters, their dilemma and
the story being told. " Orca " as well " Moby Dick " and " The Perfect
Storm " are also in this rich history of human versus sea / animal /
weather, etc...

Ang Lee does a wonderful job bringing this story to life with a kind
of Satyajit Ray - like homage to the main character who is East Indian.
There is a bit of heavy handedness in professing the existence of a god,
a slightly pedantic view that is a bit disheartening considering the
story itself is so inspiring that to actually have your characters explain
this within the dialogue is unnecessary. Convince us through action not
words.

Once we get into the adventure, all is well, in terms of movie making.
The tiger and our lead character, PI, a young man thrust upon the sea with
several animals as well as the tiger, jockey for positions in leadership, ego
and friendship . The digital effects and the Tiger itself as well as
the many hallucinatory aspects of the story are glorious in their visuals as
well as the effect it provides to the story. Is what we are seeing actually
happening ? Our narrator is young, is he fibbing ? So much time has passed
between the actual events and the telling of the story that we have to imagine
what may really have happened out there on the sea with a boy, a tiger, a
hyena , a zebra, an orangutan and a few cameos by sharks, tunas, a whale
and a cannibal flower like island of sorts. This is a poem. Not a film per
se. This is a work of art. This is a dream, a nightmare, a survival story
hidden within the mind of a young man, tested by the sea, his family, his
faith and
life.

It's a beautiful film. Ang Lee continues to challenge himself and the
audience with diverse stories that cross boundaries, cultures and genres.
He is a master filmmaker in the prime of his career. From the opening
sequence through to the end , we are entertained, challenged and satisfied.

This film is a sort of opera, with animals, nature and the existence of god at
its very core. Although by the end of this film we realize that a whole other
story exists that would have been the biggest downer in the world to experience.
A total  tragedy of the darkest dissent into death, destruction and disaster.
What  really happened out there is up to interpretation. Our narrator as well
as our director and writer allow us to ponder this interpretation as well as the
other more tragic version(s).

We highly suggest this film.
" The Life of PI " now playing nationwide in Theatres.

Art, Music and The Rolling Stones

by Joshua A. TRILIEGI

It has been over thirty-five years since I first experienced The Rolling Stones
perform live. I was ten years old. It was Nineteen-seventy five and our entire
family attended. Mom, Dad, older brother, older sister and me. Even back then,
I was the artist of the family. So it was my job to paint the famous " Lips and
Mouth " logo originally created in 1970 by fellow artist John Pasche. Later, Peter
Corriston would go on to design The controversial Some Girls album art as well
as Tattoo You. Some Girls led to law suits. I have a copy of the original with
celebrities that have since been blacked out. There has always been a very special
relationship between art and music. The Rolling Stones have known very well
through their personal relationships with interesting artists of their time how
art and music intersect. From the fabulous photography of Michael Joseph on
Beggars Banquet, which opens up into a centerfold like layout of a 17th Century
painter to Sticky Fingers and the infamous Zipper and banana by Andy Warhol.
Robert Frank's documentary and photographs used on Exile on Main Street with
the help of John Van Hammerveld 's design layout were striking and poignant.

There is a raw and honest intensity within the ethos of The Rolling Stones. An
attitude and raunchy style that says,  " Hey man, this is the way it is, this is
Rock and Roll. This is what life is like. This is who we are. Mellow out and listen "
Experiencing The Rolling Stones at ten years old in a live venue with thousands
of people and my family was a trans formative experience.  A Ritual of the highest
order. While my friends were at home watching The Brady Bunch and The Partridge
Family, I was watching Mick Jagger dance down a star shaped stage as the conical
shape slowly lowered one petal at a time. " Please allow me to introduce myself,
I'm a man of wealth and fame..."  Drums, guitar and that bongo like rhythm
leading into a raging histrionics explaining what had just happened to America
since the death of JFK and the loss of innocence that hovered above our existence,
unexplainable except through music, poetry and the like. He swung from a rope
high above our heads. He threw buckets of water on the first few rows. He danced
astride a plastic inflated erectile shaped instrument that exuded confetti from its
pointed top. Mindblowing. Of course he needed no introduction, we had grown up
listening to the Stones, glowering over the albums and remembering the lyrics.
From the early simple blues influenced love ballads into the post sixties dark tales
and on into the seventies rock.Through to The Eighties, Steel Wheels, etc ...

Album covers, album liners, T shirts and memorabilia plays a large part in Rock
and Roll. The images that will forever be connected to the music and visa versa.
I have designed a few album Covers for musician friends and it's always a special
sort of assignment. What will represent the music ? Images and sound wedded to
tell a larger story. As we drove to the forum that evening, people began to beep
their horns at the artwork on the back window. My parents had proudly taped my
version to the back of the vehicle. When people began to react, I was surprised.
For me it was just a personal expression, something fun to do, be a part of the
scene. For others it was something altogether different. We were all a part of
something. We were a family of Rock and Rollers and people wanted us to know,
that they too were heading to this ritual. That it was a community and we were
all connected through the music. We were connected in this counter culture experience.

It was the first time I realized the power of Art and Music and Ritual and
Community in a way that changed my entire perception.I sometimes wonder
how many other ten year olds were at that concert ? Not too many. How many
entire families attended ? Not too many. My old man insisted that we all attend.
He is no longer on the planet. But every time The Rolling Stones are being played,
he's here all right. He even slightly resembled Jagger and to be honest, Mom
resembled Bianca. We sorta were The Rolling Stones. Music has a way of enlivening
memories, history, loss, joy, energy, rebellion and the acceptance of the moment.

Music is life. In a way, Mick Jagger is my old man, he's still alive. Still Rocking and
Rolling. Still kicking and screaming. Still selling a million albums and reminding us
how far we have all come after all these years. The Rolling Stones tell a story of
America that is highly influenced by Black America, The Blues, The Working man,
The Bikers, The Lovers, The Outsiders, The Struggles. Its a beautiful tradition,
Rock and Roll. With a new Documentary on HBO, " Crossfire Hurricane " as well as
a new album and a Tour of America,The Rolling Stones are gathering no moss.
There is a whole new generation about to discover the Stones. They have kept
rock and roll alive. I still get teased from my family for passing out three quarters
of the way through the  concert. That was way past my bedtime. The next day my
friends at school were talking about Fred Flintstones and George Jetson, while I
was singing , " Wild Horses " , " Angie " and  " Satisfaction". Oh well.

The other day, I heard a radio D.J. say , " This is a new song by The Rolling Stones."
Its about time. I turned it up. It was good. Life is good. Rock and Roll is good.

Mr. Fords new Fall line for men drives a classic line straight
through Wall Street. Grey flannel, grey, patterns, and grey
cotton suits all with a flourish or a flare for fine tradition.
The fun is in the accessories and comfort wear : sweaters,
shoes, canes, hats, cuffs, collars and coats as well as bags.

A shop which harkens back to the day when gentlemen had
personal tailors, personal tastes, personal assistance and
could spend what they wanted, when they wanted, on who
they wanted, whenever they wanted. That day has returned.
It's not just a boys club anymore, take the stairwell up to
the second level and behold Mr Ford's new line for women.

Tom is no longer just a controversial figure anymore. He has
proven to be the comeback kid time and time again. From his
clothing design to bold accessories, from his recent foray into
film making to his personal battles, Tom Ford is a champion.
Now we can sit back & thoroughly enjoy his prodigious output.

The newest of which is a very slinky, elegant, yet sexy new
line for women with just a touch of that classic Asian influence.
As we predicted this Summer, orange is indeed the color for
women this Fall and Tom Ford is utilizing it well. Though, lets
start with those kinky Boots. A Simple, tall, long, straight flare
upward with side zipper, knee high in leather, suede and are you
ready for this ? Anaconda baby. Tom Ford knows what women
like. He knows what men want and he is willing to spend a pretty
penny on a well crafted production line that never seems trendy.

It's as if Mr Ford has experienced the 80's, the 90's, the 00's and
is now creating works for all the decades that lay ahead. Those
thoroughly modern times that we live in today. The dresses have
that touch of Coco inspired scale, tone and classicism. Black on
black, tight fitting, for the younger set, long flowing for mature
girls. The evening gowns come with matching dramatic capes.
A wide variety of shoes of the Italian inspired variety one may
see in Fellini' s, " La Dolce Vita " party scene escapades that we
love so much.  Luxury. Bold. Comfort. Fun. Classic. Flair. Serious.
Sexy. Fun. Strong. Plush all come to mind.

Controversy is no longer the story at Tom Ford. Eventually an
artist is judged by his or her output. The art, the object, the craft,
the product itself, be it a film, a shoe or an interesting turn of the
phrase. Who can deny a fabulous dress, a great pair of shoes, a
warm fuzzy hat, a classic tuxedo with your choice of over seven
different collars or the kinkiest boots in town ? " Not I" , said the
wise man as he walked among the throngs. Like most designers
of a certain ilk, it's no longer just about the clothing, It's a lifestyle.
This is a one stop shop, make-up, perfume, cologne, hats, dresses,
ties, shoes, canes, umbrellas, shirts, coats, sweaters, purses and that
special Tom Ford signature object : The Travel Bag with Zipper(s).

Tom Ford' s signature line of travel bags employs the Extra Large
Zipper motif which is indeed a copyrighted feature of this broadcast.
The zipper which is large, dipped in gold and [ we have it from a very
reliable source] that it gets easier and easier to open the more one
uses it. Makes sense to me. Travel ought to be fun, safe and sexy.
Tom Ford has been around the world and it shows plenty. The travel
bags are the tried and true keepers of the key here. They come in a
wide variety of colors, sizes and are designed with simple functional
flourishes that make them a joy to behold. An overnight bag says a
lot about the owner. These bags have the strength of a construction
worker's tool kit and the classic style of a Cary Grant romance film.
There is a very down to earth style here at Tom Ford. He has arrived.

 Written By Joshua A. TRILIEGI

The Mc Queen line has gone through a few
transformations since it lost the founder. A
groundbreaking designer who catapulted an
interesting and influential high fashion idea
into what has become an empire of Gothic
clothing for both men and women alike.

This new Fall line is a bit like day & night.
Utilizing silks, satins and worn leathers has
created an extremely stylish line that is also
quite comfortable to wear, touch and view.
Women' s bodice top jackets with dramatic
capes attached, men' s umbrella's, canes and
slippers with skull adornments, give it a Doctor
Jeckyl & Mr. Hide vibe via the turn of the century.

Many of the women's jackets and purses come with
a touch of fur, though if one is philosophically against
wearing animals, there is still plenty to appreciate.

For men, the gray, tight fitting suit & the silk striped
tuxedo of the modern variety worn by Cary Grant in
so many Hitchcock movies takes a classic look and
makes it their own. A business and holiday special.

For women, red and black shoes with fur, zippers
and a stiletto type heel that harkens back and also
forward to a time of pedestal - like adoration for the
female form which borders on fetishistic fascination.
The large boot - like arrangement seems to be an
amalgamation of classic heels, boots and the afore
mention pedestal, but with a sense of high art as well.

The future is here. A completely and utterly luxurious
line of clothing which connects the links between high
art, fashion, fetish and the creation of incredible objects.
One can only imagine visiting the factory that whips up
this line of phenomenal products. Craftsmen and women
cutting the patterns, stitching the fabrics and stretching
the leather. One thinks of architects, sculptors and draftsmen
when viewing these wearable fine art objects of the highest
order.

Highly influenced by the costumes and original designers
of clothing for king and queens of early Europe. Velvets,
ruffles, leather, suede & fur all turned on its head an re-
thought to invigorate the modern and utterly unabashed
as well as the unlimited pocketbook of the upper classes.

Although high fashion is often finicky, fickle and trendy in
its nature and there is plenty of fun, frolic and flourish here,
many of the pieces are of a classic cut and simple line that
will indeed last forever both physically and in terms of style.

The Mc Queen line is so well crafted and created that it
presents the wearer on a pedestal that entirely transcends
the pitfalls of the last season versus this season paradigm.

The calf skin urban cut jackets for women available in both
dark green and mauve distressed leather are soft to touch.
They wear well, collars flip up dramatically for that wind
swept moment and back down accordingly. The attention to
detail is downright erotic on most of the Mc Queen Fall line.
There is a keen attention to scale, line and placement that
has an artists touch at every turn. Surely crafted by the best
tailors and leather workers anywhere in the entire world.
One is left thinking about where one might wear these objects.

The Alexander Mc Queen Line is pure art. The real question here
is not whether the clothing stands up, the real question here is :
Can the world itself live up to these fascinating art like objects ?

Milan Italy has always been at the forefront of New
Design & Fashion. Certainly the look of the youth
throughout the world influences designers decisions
as to what the future is leaning towards. Ermenegildo
Zegna is a well designed line of Mens Clothing and
Accessories with a hundred years of quality stitched
into every shirt, jacket, scarf, tie, handbag and shoes.
Crafted with an attention to Texture, Tint and Tailoring.
Zegna may not be a household name in America yet,
but it is well respected around the world and has a new
line of clothes that will keep them in the publics eye
for years to come. The tightly fitted suit and pants are
what is popular in Mens clothing this year and for the
past few. We asked West Coast salespersons of Zegna in
what they thought was coming up in Mens fashion.
Marcus Hernandez, whom is the Assistant General
Manager of the Store located in Los Angeles tells us
that, "The runway leads what we will sell, wear and
celebrate from year to year." As far as we can see
this tightly fitted style will be here for some time to
come. Wrinkled linen suits are in this Spring and
Summer, that's good news for the traveller, bachelor
and man on the go. Zegna is pushing a Gold Linen
Suit which you will see on gentlemen this year.
Textures make a difference at Zegna Beverly Hills.
Classic Cotton and Linen Blended Blazers with outer
expressive stitching as well as Contemporary Leather
and Calf Skin Jackets lean toward the Motorcycle
influenced lines that were made famous by Actors
Steve McQueen and Matt Dillon. The Zegna Jacket
is finely tuned with high quality zippers, tightly fitted
with the optional hoody for late night and early morning
weather conditions. Colors lean toward the man of the
Metropolis, light grey in leather and suede. An equally
balanced design that would easily fit the Boy on the
Bike as well as the Man whom is driving the latest
Porsche, Mercedes Benz or even a guy on the Metro.
Zegna has a line of well crafted Leather Bags in a
variety of sizes that are designed for Men, but would
surely be borrowed by girlfriends, wives or sisters.
Functional, comfortable and sturdy, this is a carrying
case which will last a life time. Many are designed
without zippers, velcro or buttons, simply utilizing
magnetics, sliding units and a functionality which
has a simple yet durable design that will never go
out of style or seem trendy in ten years time. For me,
the sign of a good object is wether you want it the
first time you see it. Zegna passes that test many
times over. This is a line of Clothing , Bags and
Sweaters that one would be able to pass on from
one generation to the next.
