Inspired by the Sex Pistols, Poly Styrene decided to form her own punk band, X-Ray Spex. READ The Interview: "When working in New York, I walk during different times of day and evening making mental notes and cell phone snapshots of places that attract my interest. Later I return when it’s dawn or twilight and look again at the way these chosen “locations” appear in the shifting light. I might return to a location three or four times to see what I find…always bringing my camera and tripod and any other items such as velvet to minimize reflections if I’m photographing into a window and a small flashlight or headlamp to use if I want to paint some light. "

The process of translating what I’m seeing into a photograph using a mechanical process of adjusting this and that is what, my style? Visually, I like clean images. The use of synthetic material reinforces the commentary on man’s impulse to consume, contain and modify the earth’s resources in order to accommodate our own needs and desires. Contrary to some of the jaded ideas around the work, the paintings are actually quite optimistic in the sense that I am continually awestruck by the resilience of the natural world in the face of such heinous destruction. Tap To READ: "Playing for a live audience was the only way music would have happened for me. My training is as an actor, as a kid I was a dancer. I always sang but could never read music, and musical instruments came a little harder to me. What I'm saying is that the live performance is something I know how to do and that might make up for my lack of musicianship sometimes. There are a lot of better guitar players in the world, but a lot of them choose to only play on their couch. If they're not going to take the gig I will because I know how to leave my blood on the floor for an audience, I can tell the stories."
